Kalkan is a luxury holiday resort on the Mediterranean coast in Turkey where Villa Yar is available to rent. A traditional Turkish fishing village full of character and charm, with stunning sea views and all the modern improvements such as top-class restaurants.

Described by many as the Jewel of Turkey's Turquoise Southern Coast, this area certainly has much more to offer than simply outstanding natural beauty. Nestled against a backdrop of the Taurus mountains this beautiful destination has an exclusive cosmopolitan feel.  It prides itself on award winning restaurants such as Coast, Trio and Gourmet. You should not experience a bad meal once with so many excellent places to choose from! Style varies from traditional Turkish Ottoman houses serving delicious mezze platters to delightful rooftop terraces overlooking the bay and the town below. With watering holes such as Yacht Point on the Marina front for a beer or cocktail, you can still catch the big games at Moonlight bar. Unspoilt by mass tourism, the locals give levels of service beyond expectations.

There are excellent health spa facilities and Turkish baths, a huge variety of shops excelling in leather goods and the latest fashion, supermarkets with local and imported foods, bars, top-class restaurants with fresh seafood, meats and hugely flavoursome appetiziers along with outstanding service, a dive centre, watersports, boat tours, marina, health centre, weekly markets, fishing trips and much much more...

Repeatedly positive reviews appear in Conde Nast Traveller magazine and Sunday Times Traveller. Kalkan is described as "a thriving holiday resort".

For those who haven't yet discovered the joys of Turkey you will be pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome, excellent service and Western approach to life.

My only warning? You will fall in love and want to return again and again...

My Perfect Week

If you only have one week in Kalkan you must make the most of it!

Day 1 - relax by the pool at Villa Yar. This will help you get into the holiday state of mind and get used to the temperatures. Go for a traditional Turkish bath massage early evening to prepare your skin for the week ahead. Explore the pretty old town of Kalkan and decide where to eat.

Day 2 - visit one of the superb beach clubs for the day. This gives you the chance to swim in the sea and enjoy the long lunch only holidays can encourage.

Day 3 - spend the morning at the villa relaxing then after a BBQ lunch head to neighbouring Kapatus beach for the last few hours of sun. Take the cool box and ensure you have some ice cool beers to watch the sun set!

Day 4 - the weekly market is well worth a visit. Go early morning to avoid the crowds and the heat. Enjoy a lunch in town at the Marina front. Head back to the villa for the afternoon. Stay in and have dinner on the terrace, cooking your freshly purchased goods!

Day 5 - go to Xanthos to see the spectacular ruins, then head to Patara. Look at the ancient ampitheatre first then relax on the 18km white sand beach. Take a frisby! Plus the coolbox from the villa with obligatory beers. Go shopping early evening, book your boat trip and have a stylish roof-terrace supper.

Day 6 - a boat trip is a must. Cruise around the local islands for the day, enjoying a sumptuous lunch. Enjoy your last night in Kalkan!

Day 7 - pack up and time to go home...if you are driving to the airport why not stop at Gocek or Fethiye on the way for a decent meal before your flight? You can tick another town off your list.

Beaches & Swimming

Kalkan has it's own beach near the marina but is also host to two stunning neighbouring beaches, Kaputas and Patara. Kaputas is the most photographed bay in Turkey - you will recognise it from many adverts. Patara is an 18km stretch of pure white sand. Take a cool box and watch the sunset; watch out for the turtle nests though! There is a mediocre restaurant at Patara but no facilities at Kaputas.
There are a number of beach clubs around the bay due to the rocky outcrop, all providing top levels of service. Relax on a sunbed while the efficient staff keep a close eye on your refreshment needs. All restaurants provide the perfect light snack or traditional Turkish style lunch, while diving platforms and floating platoons provide no excuse not to cool down in the clear waters! Palm Beach Club is one of our favourites and is always excellent. They offer a collection service. Villa Mahal Beach club is within walking distance of the villa and is a stylish upmarket venue. The lunch menu here is more European, with stone baked pizzas and Parma ham. The Kalkan Beach Park is just 100m away and offers free sunloungers. Perfect if you want a swim in the sea and very child friendly. This is where the boat shuttle departs from.

Water Sports

Kalkan is a perfect place for the waterski and wakeboard fan. The natural harbour is flat calm most mornings. Aristos Watersports based at Indigo Beach Club gives excellent tuition and rents out boats for day trips. Scuba divers also have the choice of two dive boats in the habour or just enjoy the clear waters by simply swimming or snorkling. For kids there are banana boats and donut rings. You can organise watersports in advance before you go or with one of the reps at the beach clubs.

Gulet Boat Trips

A long lazy day can be spent admiring the stunning coastline from the deck of a traditional Gulet visiting sea caves, beaches and bays. All trips include swim stops and tasty turkish meals served on board with snorkling and even waterskiing if you wish! Fishing trips and romantic moonlight cruises can be arranged also.

Prices start at £15 per person or hire a boat privately for the day (£200 approx) and dictate the agenda. The one from Kalkan is great for first timers, however the one from Kas to Kekova explores the sunken city and is worth the drive.

Local Towns

The town of Kas is a short drive from Kalkan and has a huge marina which offers Gulet trips and ferries to visit the Greek Island of Mais.
Fethiye is the nearest city and has a huge array of shops, along with the most fantastic fish market where you pick exactly what you would like to be cooked for you to enjoy in one of the surrounding restaurants!

Islamlar is a nice drive up in the hills where there are trout farms - delicious Turkish style 'fish and chips' for lunch!

Sights

The ancient ruins at Xanthos are exquisite and really emphasise the age and history of the area and were recently reviewed in Conde Nast Traveller magazine as outstanding.
The 20km gorge at Saklikent is breathtaking - up to 4km high at parts! Prepare to get wet if you visit early in the season...
Car hire is recommended if you really want to explore the area, or most tour companies in Kalkan offer collection packages. Jeep safaries and many other tours are available. The Lycian Way coastal walk is highly recommended, plus cookery schools are available. All soud a bit too exciting? Just relax by the pool!

Airport

The nearest international airport is Dalaman, just over an hours drive away. Please see the 'Availability' page to discover which airlines fly from your local airport.
Upon booking with us we can help you to arrange your airport transfers. We always use a reknowned local company with an impressive fleet of airconditioned vehicles and uniformed drivers. They also provide rental cars. They wll meet you in the Arrivals area of the airport. If you would prefer to hire a car at Dalaman airport we can provide directions to the Villa. Driving is fine in Turkey; beware the haph-hazard style local drivers, sharp bends and the police speed traps but the roads are normally quiet and the route is simple.
